Hiking enthusiast and San Carlos resident Tom Davids, invites you to join him on his weekly walks. This month, Tom is returning to the redwoods for two great hikes.
By Tom Davids
On Wednesday, October 9, we will revisit the Purisima Creek Redwoods OSP. Our destination is Bald Knob, which is not so bald anymore, but from its 2100ft summit we still have filtered views of the coast line. This is an in-and-out trail which totals 4.6 miles round trip. There is a modest elevation gain of 400' and this hike is rated moderate. Along the way are signs of the logging past and scenic view points to the coast below. There are no toilet facilities at the trail head or on the trail but there is plenty of cover. No charge for this hike. No dogs allowed.
We will car pool from the Adult Community Center, leaving at 9am and returning by 1pm. If you drive direct, the trail head is gate PC-04, located on Tunitas Rd, about 2.25 miles west of Skyline Blvd.
On Saturday, October 12, our hike is in Portola Redwoods State Park and Pescadero Creek County Park. This is a long 12 mile loop on the Butano Ridge Loop Tr. with a 2200' elevation gain. Most of the loop is through second growth redwood and there are limited ridge top views. Our return is on the Pomponio Trail which runs parallel to and north of Pescadero Creek.
After leaving the trail head, the only toilet facility is at Shaw Trail Camp, 8 miles into the hike.
There is a $5 per hiker fee for this hike, payable to the Park and Recreation Dept. No dogs allowed.
We will car pool from the Sam Trans Garage, leaving at 8am and returning about 4pm. If you drive direct, take Skyline Blvd. to Alpine Rd, go west on Alpine Rd. 3.4 miles and turn left on State Park Rd. Continue another 3.3.miles to park headquarters. There is a charge of $10 per car for admittance to the park.
PLEASE EMAIL ME if you plan to join either of these hikes.
