Cocktails to Compliment the Oscars

Toast to the best movie of the year with one of these special cocktails recipes, designed specifically to compliment the winner.

It’s almost time to hit the couch for the 84th Academy Awards -- an evening of the year’s best cinema, age-old Billy Crystal jokes and of course, the glamorous (and shocking!) dresses on the Red Carpet.

With an exciting evening ahead and perhaps guests on the way, kick back, relax and honor your favorite films of the year by toasting the best picture with the perfect cocktail to match this year’s outstanding Oscar nominees.

Whether you’ve been daydreaming about being swept back to the Roaring 20’s at the stroke of midnight, or reminiscing on the A’s golden streak and Billy Bean’s baseball success, BevMo! has provided a list of the perfect drinks to bring you closer to the stage.

French 75 – To toast The Artist (Best Picture)


  • 2 ounces London dry gin
  • 1 teaspoon superfine sugar
  • 1/2 ounce lemon juice
  • 5 ounces Brut champagne
  • Glass type: Collins glass

Preparation – Shake well with cracked ice in a chilled cocktail shaker, then strain into a Collins glass half-full of cracked ice. Top with champagne.


Mint Julep – To toast The Help (Best Picture)


  • 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves
  • 2 cups water, heated
  • 2 cups sugar
  • Cracked ice
  • Maker’s Mark

Preparation – Make syrup: Heat water. Whisk in sugar and heat until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat. Add mint and let the mixture steep for 20 to 30 minutes. For each Mint Julep, add cracked or crushed ice to Julep tumbler or glass, 1.5 ounces of Maker’s Mark and 2.5 teaspoons syrup, or to taste. Stir lightly. Garnish with fresh mint leaf and serve with a straw.


Locomotive – To toast Hugo (Best Picture)


  • 1 pint red Roussilon or Burgundy Wine (16 ounce Porta dos Cavaleiros Dao 2007)
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 ounce honey
  • 1 drop essence of cinnamon (1/4 tsp ground cinnamon)
  • 3 drop essence of clove (1/8 tsp ground clove)
  • 1/2 gill Curacao (2 ounces Senio Curacao)
  • Nutmeg garnish (optional)

Preparation – Heat wine with cinnamon and clove to nearly boiling. Meanwhile, beat up egg yolks, honey and Curacao until frothed. Add hot wine to egg yolk mixture, mix and serve. Add freshly grated nutmeg garnish (optional)


Dark and Stormy – To toast The Tree of Life (Best Picture)

Ingredients (serves 1):

  • 2 ounces dark rum
  • 1/2  ounce fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup, or to taste
  • 4-6 ounces fresh ginger beer

Preparation – Build the drink in a highball glass filled with ice, adjusting for sweetness and tartness. Depending on when you stop the fermentation of the ginger beer, it may be fully dry or still retain enough sweetness that additional simple syrup is unnecessary. Garnish with a wedge of lime.


Harvey Wallbanger – To toast Moneyball (Best Picture, Best Actor – Brad Pitt)


  • 45 ml (3 parts) Vodka
  • 15 ml (1 part) Galliano
  • 90 ml (6 parts) fresh orange juice
  • Maraschino cherry
  • Glass type: highball glass

Preparation – Stir the vodka and orange juice with ice in the glass, then float the Galliano on top. Garnish and serve.


Manhattan – To toast Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Best Picture)


  • 2 ounces rye whiskey
  • 1 ounce Italian vermouth
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Maraschino cherry (optional)
  • Glass type: cocktail glass

Preparation – Shake the rye, vermouth and bitters well with cracked ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with twist or maraschino cherry.


Mai Tai – To toast The Descendants (Best Picture, Best Actor – George Clooney)

Ingredients (serves 1):

  • 1 ounce light rum
  • 1/2 ounce crème de almond
  • 1/2 ounce triple sec
  • Sweet and sour mix
  • Pineapple juice
  • 1/2 ounce Appleton Estate rum
  • Glass type: Collins glass

Preparation – Pour light rum, crème de almond and triple sec (in order) into a Collins glass. Almost fill with equal pats sweet and sour mix and pineapple juice. Add dark rum, a large straw and serve unstirred.
