Relic: The books of Eva

Relic is the first book in the series the Books of Eva. It follows a similar storyline to the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It is similar to the Hunger Games because the people in the book are post-apocalypse, and are told by their rules that they will send 18 year old on this journey that will tell the people of their homeland why they shouldn’t go back to the old days. In this version of the apocalypse story, there are ancient relics that are from the old times, the pre-healing times, of when the people worshipped a God called Apple. This Apple is the software company that makes a lot of our devices today.

The prologue is in third person narrative of the main character’s brother. Then it switches abruptly to first person, as our heroine, Eva, tells us everything that we need to know for the rest of the book. She is the first woman in one hundred and fifty years to compete in a challenge called the Testing. This is where the Hunger Games part of the story fits in. Many people die during the testing for a place that they don’t really know. Apparently, the government is trying to keep their citizens from knowing what is really going on and what the God called Apple really is. And how technology isn’t evil.

It is a good book, but it does have some tendencies to take from other books. Some of the time, I would be thinking that I was reading a different book, since the lines were so similar. Overall, when I was finished with it I wanted to read the next one immediately. I needed to know what happens to Eva and Jaspar and everyone else, and do they fight what the government has put into place. It is predictable, but it is well written, and the characters are people that you come to love and hope for.
