The Story:  The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world's most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC is based off the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. The original Broadway production, starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel, opened on November 16, 1959. It was adapted as a 1965 film musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which won five Academy Awards. The Sound of Music was the final musical written by Rodgers and Hammerstein; Hammerstein died of cancer nine months after the Broadway premiere. THE SOUND OF MUSIC would go on to win ten Tony Awards including best musical in 1960.
