Rain In June? Imagine That!

A rainy weekend is expected for San Mateo County and the rest of the Bay Area.

Last weekend's feature at Palo Alto's Stanford Theatre was the 1950's classic film "Singin' in the Rain."  Was it an omen of things to come? Were Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds trying to tell us something?

Parts of the Bay Area have already seen record-breaking amounts of rain this weekend, an event highly unusual for the first weekend of June.

As of 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning, San Francisco International Airport had seen .39 inches of rain, a record high for June 4th. "The record was .16 in 1947. We've already doubled it and it's still raining," National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Walbrun said.

Walbrun was quick to add that the amount of rain isn't extraordinary; what is noteworthy is the fact that we're seeing it in June. The same amount of rain in the middle of winter "wouldn't be newsworthy," he said.

The California Highway Patrol found itself unusually busy for a Saturday morning due to the rain. Just after 7 a.m., flooding two to three inches deep was reported  on southbound Highway 101 between Hillsdale Boulevard and Ralston Avenue in the San Mateo/Belmont area.

The National Weather Service is expecting the steady rain to continue throughout the Bay Area through noon Saturday, becoming partly cloudy with showers throughout the rest of the weekend.

By Monday afternoon, the region should see an end to the rain, Walbrun said.

Within the Bay Area, the Santa Cruz Mountains are expected to be hardest hit with rain this weekend, he said.
