A visit to Muir Woods National Monument or any other national park will be free this Saturday as part of National Get Outdoors Day, according to park officials. The fifth-annual version of the celebration is an effort to encourage healthy outdoor activities at sites across the country.
Muir Woods National Monument, the famous redwood forest in Marin County, usually costs $7 for an adult to enter for the day but will allow visitors for free Saturday for the celebration. Other outdoor activities are also planned for Saturday around the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, including a hike to the shipwrecks at Land's End and a guided walk through the National Cemetery in the Presidio, according to National Park Service officials.
"Outdoor physical activity is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and the Golden Gate National Parks is a great place to get out and enjoy so many different activities," Golden Gate National Recreation Area General Superintendent Frank Dean said in a statement.
The park service will also have four more free entrance days this year: Sept. 29 for National Public Lands Day and Nov. 10 through 12 for Veteran's Day weekend. For more information about National Get Outdoors Day, visit www.nationalgetoutdoorsday.org.
