Alleged Drunk Driver Triggers Deadly Hwy. 101 Crash

All southbound lanes were closed for three hours following early Sunday morning crash.

CHP first received a call at 2:04 a.m. of a single vehicle crash on southbound 101, just south of the Broadway exit in Burlingame, but three other vehicles, including a party bus, quickly became involved.

CHP public information officer Arturo Montiel said it appeared that the driver of a red Honda coupe, traveling southbound, first lost control of his car and may have collided with the center divider.

The vehicle came to rest facing northbound within the No. 1 and No. 2 lanes, Montiel said, where the party bus collided with the Honda's front end, it appears.
It is unclear how the two other vehicles, a silver Honda Civic and a black Lexus were involved at this time.

Shortly thereafter that a 1998 Ford Party Bus and two other vehicles were also involved in the collision.

The driver of the Red Honda was transported to Stanford with major injuries and the passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene by on scene emergency personnel.

Eight passengers from the party bus were also transported, two with moderate and three with minor injuries to Stanford Hospital and three with minor injuries to San Francisco General Hospital.

The driver of the party bus sustained moderate injuries as a result of this collision but refused medical attention at the scene and drove to a local hospital.

There was no immediate information about any injuries to the drivers of the silver Honda Civic and the black Lexus.

This collision is currently under investigation and it appears that both parties in the Red Honda had consumed alcohol earlier that evening however, the level of impairment is unknown at this time.

Traffic was diverted at Broadway to city streets during the on scene investigation with minimal effect on traffic, Montiel said. The No. 1 lane was then opened and remained open until all lanes were opened at 5:10am.

No arrests have been made at this time. If there are any witnesses to this collision, please contact Officer Galindo at (650) 369-6261.
