Redwood City Goes Crazy at Fab Four Concert!

Redwood City, CA: Last night on November 24, 2012 in downtown Redwood City an historic event took place at The Fox Theater. The Fab Four, a Beatles tribute band, played to the first ever “Sold Out” show at the Fox Theater.

The show was a medley of Beatles’ songs beginning in the early years with “I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” and moving on to the psychedelic era of “Sergeant Pepper’s.” John Lennon (played by Ron McNeil) sang a moving rendition of “Imagine.” For the finale, the Fab Four played a rousing rendition of “Hey Jude” that had the audience on their feet and singing “na-na-na-na-na-na-na” right along with the band.

The Fab Four, though a cover band, actually played the instruments and sang live on stage without a sound track or over-dubbing. The musicianship was technically proficient and very entertaining. The Fab Four are very talented young men.

Throughout the night I saw broad smiles on the faces of those in the audience. While there was a wide age-range represented, the audience was predominantly people in their 50’s and 60’s. You knew the music triggered happy memories of their youth and a more carefree time. They danced in the isles, clapped to the beat of songs, and sang when cued by the band to join in the fun. The house was rockin’ and the audience loved it!

My favorite audience member was a fit, gray-haired woman clad in a blue sweater and jeans, who danced in the isle like the go-go dancers on the television shows of that era such as Shindig and Hullabaloo. She was so entertaining and everyone seemed to enjoy watching her cut loose with such joy and abandon.

The Fox Theatre was the perfect host for this event. They made everyone comfortable and at ease. Even the co-owner, Eric Lochtefeld, made fun of the theater’s short comings when he apologized for the “crappy” seating and promised it would be replaced soon to provide more comfort. How can you not like a guy who wants to make your future experiences at his business more enjoyable?

Security guards were present and even they seemed to have entered a time-warp. Their behavior was reminiscent of the security staff in the 1960’s. They were very accommodating and talked, joked, and laughed with the audience members. They let everyone have fun and enjoyed the show, too.

The sound system was excellent and you could hear every note from any location in the house. The mix was spot on so that you could listen to the melody and hear the individual instruments, too.

My wife and I took our two adult sons (ages 25 and 27) with us. They are both professional musicians, but have never been big fans of the Beatles’ music. Even they enjoyed the show and were impressed with the musicianship of the band. They especially enjoyed watching old folks acting like crazed fans that were cutting loose and having so much fun. It helped them to understand the impact the Beatles had on the lives and times of previous generations.

The Fab Four will return next year to the Fox Theater. If you get a chance, go see them when they are in town. You’ll be glad you did.
