Palm Sunday - What Do Christians Celebrate?

Christians celebrate the entry into Jerusalem on a colt of a donkey, by their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This event happened one week before his death and resurrection.

Most Christians believe Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week and is sometimes called “Passion Sunday.” Holy Week concludes on Easter Sunday.

In the Holy Bible it is written that Jesus entered Jerusalem being greeted by a crowd of people waving palm branches, who then covered his path with those same palm branches. This was done as a sign of homage and submission for Jesus as their promised Messiah.

Today, most Christians are given palm branches on Palm Sunday as a symbol of remembrance of Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death for the sins of humanity on the cross, and praise him for the gift of salvation and look expectantly to his second coming.

The people of Jerusalem did not see Jesus as a spiritual leader but instead they saw him as a political leader, (Messiah), who would overthrow the Romans and restore Israel’s independence. They shouted “Hosanna” meaning “save now.” Large Passover crowds gathered around Jesus and shouted “Hosanna to the Son of David!"

After entering Jerusalem the Romans captured Jesus and made him their prisoner. They made him carry his cross to the field of others who were nailed to their crosses. Crucifixion is an ancient form of execution. The victim’s hands and feet are bound and then nailed to the cross. It is a most horribly painful and disgraceful method of capital punishment.

The word crucifixion comes from the Latin “crucifixion,” or “crucifixus,” meaning “fixed to a cross.”
