Redwood City, CA: Today, May 27, 2013, at 10:00 AM, The Archives Committee of the Redwood City Public Library will be having their annual Memorial Day celebrations at Union Cemetery to celebrate the veterans from all the American wars.

It is the celebration for those who gave everything for our freedom. This celebration has honor guest and noted speakers. docent will give limited tours to guests before and after the celebration.

The highlight of Union Cemetery in my humble opinion is the bronze statue of a Union Soldier. At one time this bronze was destroyed by vandals and if it were not for certain members of the Archives Committee I fear Redwood City may have lost a true historical treasure. Thank you to the men and women who took part in this rescue.

The celebration the Archives Committee offer to Redwood City is usually a well attended occasion so either arrive early or bring a portable chair with you. Also, usually a special treat is available known as the John G. Edmonds book, Union Cemetery, which can be used for a self guided tour. It sells for $20.00. A very good value for all it's content and insight on Union Cemetery and all it has to offer Redwood City residents and others who travel for miles to see and experience Union Cemetery.Memorial Day celebration has been a family tradition for many Redwood City families for several generations.

There is always a marching band and flag waving. Limited guided tours are given by local volunteer docent . Bring your whole family for a morning of history, entertainment and community spirit. You will be glad you did.

As a side note, Union Cemetery was established in 1859. You could buy a plot for $10, which made you a member of the Union Cemetery Association. The first person to be buried in Union Cemetery was Annie M. Douglass. She was move from the city grave site which now is where Sequoia High School sits.Union Cemetery is on Woodside Road at El Camino Real.

Crippen and Flynn's parking lot next door allows free parking to those why are attending the celebration. Cost is Free.
