Shop Local: Gift Ideas from Redwood City Businesses

Tired of battling the crowds at the malls or big chain stores? Here are gift ideas from two local Redwood City businesses for your holiday shopping.

Driving around and around trying to find a parking space, being shoved and pushed through crowds of shoppers, only to find someone just bought the last one of what you came for—sound familiar? If you’ve been doing your holiday shopping at malls or big chain stores this year, it probably does.

Therefore, Redwood City Patch wants to bring you a few holiday shopping ideas from local, independent businesses that just might have something that lets you cross a name or two off your list. It’s all in the name of “Shop Local!”

Captain’s

2066 Broadway St. / 650-568-1931

Captain’s, which opened in July, sells unique clothing and accessories for adults all the way down to infants. With a wide range of styles from skateboarder, to cowboy chic, to vintage biker, and everything in between, you can be sure what you find at Captain’s cannot be found in many of the big chain stores—which means your gift will be treasured and memorable.

Casey Zelinski, who co-owns the shop with his wife Jody, says business has been great for the store since opening just under six months ago.

“Business has been pretty good so far,” he said Saturday. “Especially the last couple days have been great.”

Zelinski says some of the biggest items so far this holiday season have been Brixton flannels for the colder weather, and women’s sweatshirts by Revel 8.

“Kids’ stuff has been selling well too,” he said, pointing out the store’s collections of infant onesies, and sweatshirts, flannels and t-shirts for toddlers.

For someone looking for something really out-of-the-ordinary for a stocking stuffer or special gift this season, Zelinski also suggests some of Captain’s vintage belt buckles and unique jewelry items.

Captain’s is open Monday through Saturday at 11 a.m. Visit the online store as well as www.captainssk8.com.

I agree, the public has the right to know what they are eating. It is absurd to be purchasing foodRead More that contains GMOs and not be able to know it is in the food.... why the secret if it is so safe??? I will not shop at any food stores that refuse to provide the public with information on what I am eating or serving to the people I care about. Trader Joes and Whole Foods have my loyalty for having the courage to stand up against the big guys and set an example by doing what is right for the consumer and not folding to pressure from Monsanto, Dupont and the other corporate giants that could care less about our safety and only care about how much money they can rake in.
