New Cell Sites Should Improve Local Service in 2013

Verizon has added new cell sites in Menlo Park, Redwood City and Pacifica, and said county locals should see an improvement in service.

Calling, downloading apps and surfing the web will hopefully be easier and faster in 2013 for residents and travelers in San Mateo County, thanks to new Verizon Wireless cell sites in Menlo Park, Pacifica and Redwood City.

The sites should improve coverage in the following areas:

  • Menlo Park: Bay Road, Middlefield Road and Marsh Road
  • Pacifica: Oddstad Boulevard and Park Pacifica Avenue
  • Redwood City: Northern area of Seaport Boulevard

Since 2000, Verizon has invested more than $70 billion on increasing the coverage and capacity of its network, and to add new services, the company said in a statement last week.

The network upgrade "is part of the company's ongoing investment to keep improving and strengthening" its network, the statement indicated.

I have terrible cell service from my home in Emerald Hills. We have called AT&T several times to see if they could rectify the problem but to no avail. They say that they have ample cell tower coverage in this area but I still can't answer my cell phone in my house!

I have terrible cell service at home on Valota Rd. in Redwood City, only a mile from downtown! I'm on 'Sprint'. Crawl is more like it!

We have T-Mobile and our reception has gone downhill of late. We live near the Alameda in the Woodside Plaza neighborhood and usually just get one bar if we're lucky at home. It was never a very strong signal here, but in the last year it's gotten noticeably worse.
Question - will this new cell site benefit only Verizon customers, or do all carriers benefit from the towers?

My impression was that it will benefit Verizon customers the most, but occasionally other carriers do "rent" bandwidth on other companies' towers in areas where they don't have many. So hopefully that is the case and we all see a boost!

We live on Palm near Valota. We have tmobile and have the worst reception ever !!! I have talked with them dozens of times to no avail. I was promised a booster but have been told they have given out 60k and now they are out. How lame is that ??
Maybe a class action suit would help to rectify this ridiculous and irritating situation. pat

Good question, cipiazza. This is probably related to a sewage pipeline replacement project takingRead More place nearby.

Vanessa and ctpiazza, Buckley Stone at Pete's Harbor says it is because some time ago the CityRead More dredged near muni and ran a pipe under to spill it out at Bair Island, so it is actually the remains of rotting sea life. He knows so much about this area having been at Pete's for 20 years and knowing so much about the area the tides and the nature and land around here.
