Friday Night Concerts Saved by Businesses

After the state eliminated redevelopment agencies, future funding for the Music on the Square concert series was uncertain.

Dust off your dancing shoes, buy a bottle of sunscreen and get ready for the Friday night concert series “Music on the Square” starting June 1.

Last year, the future of the concerts when Gov. Jerry Brown decided to , which funded various projects from city events to subsidizing affordable housing projects.

The city partnered with the Downtown Business Group and the Fox Theatre to secure the remainder of the funding that was dissolved along with the redevelopment agency.

Attendees will still have the opportunity to donate any amount to the “Bucket Brigade” that circles the crowds during the concerts.

The following businesses contributed to the continuation of the concerts.

The concerts will also continue until September, an extra month, thanks to the Shops on Broadway:

In a statement, city spokesperson Malcolm Smith wrote, “Redwood City wishes to offer its gratitude to all the sponsors and partners who have helped to ensure another wonderful season of Music on the Square for the community.”

“Their participation with the City to help fund this concert series is a testament to their commitment and dedication to the people of Redwood City,” he added. “And, a big thank you in advance to the community members who will become partners by donating to Music on the Square!”
