How the 100 Were Chosen

Fortune partnered with the Great Place to Work Institute to compile the list. An extensive employee survey was sent to 280 companies in Corporate America, Fortune explained. Companies must use an online nomination form, and are eligible only if it is five years old and has more than 1,000 employees.

The institute’s Trust Index survey, sent to a random sample of more than 246,000 employees at the companies, comprised of two-thirds of a company’s score. Employees responded to questions about their attitudes about management's credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie.

The other third is calculated based on responses to the institute’s Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs, and diversity efforts.
