Caltrain Encouraging People To 'Break-Up' With Cars

Written By Bay City News

Bay Area transit agencies are urging motorists to "break up" with their gas-guzzling vehicles on National Dump the Pump Day and turn to public transit today and beyond.

Caltrain and SamTrans are holding a "break-up party" Thursday at the Redwood City Caltrain station. The agencies are also holding an online contest in which a grand prize will be given to the person who posts the best break-up line or photo
on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #LaterPump.

The break-up lines posted Thursday morning include a tweet that reads, "I think we should see other cost effective, environment friendly modes of transportation."

Another poster wrote, "Look...It's not you...It's the environment."

The grand prize is an Ogio laptop backpack that Caltrain and SamTrans hope the winner will use to carry their belongings on their new public transit commutes.

The first 100 customers to stop by the Dump the Pump booth at the Caltrain station between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. will receive free giveaways. The station is located at 1 James Ave. in downtown Redwood City. According to SamTrans, switching to public transit can result in savings of as much as $9,000 per household each year. The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is encouraging people to take a ride on a VTA bus or light-rail vehicle today and then incorporate that into their daily routine.
