A Second Chance for Pier 1

A new Pier 1 Imports store is slated to open in the Sequoia Station shopping center in March.

Fans of the home decor chain Pier 1 Imports may be happy to know that Redwood City will soon be gaining a new location in the Sequoia Station shopping center.

Redwood City used to be home to a Pier 1 store at 2501 El Camino Real, but the location closed a few years ago - possibly when , which had a location less than a block from Pier 1, started expanding stores and including aisles full of affordable home decor items.

Perhaps the new Sequoia Station Pier 1 will give the chain a second chance in Redwood City, and hold its own.

The Florida-based company Regency Centers, which owns Sequoia Station, announced it had leased Pier 1 Imports the 102,848-square-foot retail space in September of last year, bringing the shopping center to full capacity. Perhaps being neighbor to such anchors as , , and will give Pier 1 a fighting chance this time around.

Pier 1 Imports is known for its home decor, including seasonal items for various holidays; kitchenware such as place settings, glassware and more; candles and other fragrance items; furniture; home textiles; gifts and more, in bright colors and patterns the Pier 1 marketing team says can "get the blah out of any room."

Pier 1 has many die-hard fans of its nearby San Mateo location, the next closest since Pier 1's first Redwood City location on El Camino closed.

"In my opinion, [Pier 1 Imports] beats Cost Plus. It's cleaner, less dusty, and has a nice display and layout, which really encourages you to buy the complimenting pieces," said Yelp.com reviewer Christina G. "And, on top of all of that - pleasant conversation, helpful, upbeat, and sparkly, sparkly, holiday decor.  The best!"

"Awesome customer service. I always find something every time I come here," said reviewer L.H., who gives the San Mateo location five stars. "They have something at every price point, and I love looking through their clearance section. I wish my house was bigger so I could buy more pretty things from them!"

Construction has been going strong at the new Sequoia Station location for the past few months. Though Pier 1 had planned to open the store by the end of February, company representatives said this week that the opening has been pushed to March.

"We are so excited about the grand opening of Store #1585 in Redwood City, California!" said Stephanie H. from Pier 1's consumer relations department on Monday.
