Young RWC Filmmakers to Make Debut at Fox Theatre

Students from Summit Prep, Woodside and Everest high schools will have entries in the film festival.

The first Fresh Takes National Youth Filmfest debuts at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City, CA, Nov. 22-23 with 49 films from around throughout the nation, produced by young filmmakers 22 years or younger.

The festival begins Friday night with a reception followed by the showing of 11 of the film entries.

Saturday, there are five different sessions showing the remaining 38 entries, including the showing of a feature-length “mockumentary” Saturday evening, followed by the awards ceremony.

A “Best in Fest” award will be presented along with a $5,000 cash prize to the winner.

The awards ceremony also will include the results of the “People’s Choice” contest, in which anyone can go online and vote for their favorite film.

Friday night’s reception will include a ceremony honoring Bay Area documentary filmmaker Kevin Epps, and his induction into the Fresh Takes Hall of Fame.

Epps, who grew up in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood of San Francisco, has gained national and international renown for his film “Straight Outta Hunters Point.” His sequel, “Straight Outta Hunters Point 2,” was shown this year at the 65th Cannes Film Festival.

The 49 films to be shown at the festival were culled from entries from throughout the United States and the world, including France, Australia, Portugal and South Africa.

Filmmakers attending the festival will be coming from as far away as Chicago, New York, North Carolina, Hawaii, Texas, and Connecticut.

Local filmmakers whose entries will be shown at the festival include:

Sean Story, Everest Prep School, Film: “Slum of Dreams,” a documentary

James Gordon, San Francisco State University, Film: “Scotty,” a short film

Gerardo Valencia, Woodside High School, Film: “The Box,” an animated film

Max Sharif, Summit Prep School, Film: Guantanamo Park,” a short film

Scott Feurhelm, Woodside High School, Film: “Slender,” a short film

The Fresh Takes National Youth Filmfest is presented by Dailymotion, the world’s second-largest online video-sharing site, and by Rocketfuel, a Redwood City-based digital advertising and marketing media-buying firm.

Founded in 2010, Fresh Takes is a nonprofit organization that provides camps and programs to teach youth digital, computer-based filmmaking and editing. The Fresh Takes lab, supervised by veteran television broadcaster Pete Liebengood, features a state-of-the-art computer lab, green-screen station and a high-end recording studio. Fresh Takes campers have produced public services announcements, marketing videos, online commercials and TV commercials for local business and nonprofits, as well as personal videos and short films.
