Redwood City, CA - This October marks the incredible 75th Anniversary of Redwood City's Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. In commemoration of a remarkable 75 years of making life better for the community, the City is holding a Gala "Fun" Raiser at the historic Fox Theatre, with all proceeds going to support the new Parks and Arts Foundation - which in turn, supports the Parks Department and the community.

It's hard to believe, but it was way back in 1937 that the precursor to the City's Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Department first came into being. Some things were very different back then - a gallon of gas was 10¢, the average price of a house was $4,100, the Golden Gate Bridge first opened to traffic, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt began his second term as President.

But some things were the same then as they are now - to be healthy and thrive, cities have always needed a strong sense of community, public places for people to gather, open, green spaces for families, recreation programs, and community services...and Redwood City's PRCS is to be congratulated for fulfilling that need for 75 very successful years.

PRCS has come a long way since a young man named Alfred "Red" Morton started a recreational softball league here in 1937. Today, the Department provides hundreds of classes, camps, programs, and services for tens of thousands of residents each year; offers after school educational and sports programming for over 8,000 elementary school children; delivers specialized services to thousands of residents who need extra support; brings over 100,000 visits to Downtown each extended summer season through its events programming; and hosts hundreds of thousands of people in the City's 30 parks, plazas, and playgrounds each year. That's a lot to celebrate!

And, this year is especially significant because PRCS is launching a new non-profit organization - the Redwood City Parks and Arts Foundation. This Foundation will further the PRCS mission of providing critical services to the Community, and the October 18th "Fun" Raiser will help to get that new foundation up and running. This event's fantastic program includes a VIP Reception with a hosted bar (beer/wine), a "Taste of Redwood City" (local restaurants providing food), a raffle of great local prizes, and admission to a fantastic concert by the renowned party band, "Love Fool," all for $50 (concert only is $25 advance purchase).
