Diamond Award Recipients Announced

The awards, presented by the Peninsula Arts Council are bestowed upon artists in nine categories throughout San Mateo County. Several awards are going to Redwood City recipients.

 

From arts volunteers and organizations to young artists and educators, the Peninsula Arts Council (PAC) recognizes the contributions made throughout the year by members of the San Mateo County arts community.

This week, the San Carlos-based PAC announced the 2012 Diamond Award recipients,  recognizing artistic achievement in San Mateo County in nine categories. Of over 60 nominations received through an open call for nominations, PAC and guest judges narrowed down the roster to this impressive list of honorees:

  • Music for Minors, Arts Organization 
  • Dr. Bryan Baker, Individual Artist
  • Sean Traynor, Ray Lorenzato Young Artist
  • Amanda Odasz, Ray Lorenzato Young Artist
  • Barbara Pierce, Redwood City Councilmember and Arts Volunteer
  • Maureen McVerry, Arts Educator
  • Eric & Lori Lochtefeld, Redwood City's Fox Theatre, Local Business Support
  • Coastside Doctors Without Borders Fundraiser, Judi Shintani, Donor Support
  • Redwood City Civic Cultural Commission Government Support and
  • Bardi Rosman Koodrin, Special Recognition 

These 10 new honorees will join a roster of more than 100 artists and organizations who have received this prestigious award over the event’s 10-year history.  Previous notable honorees have included Neil and Pegi Young, Troy Paiva, Jackie Speier, Nathan Chan, Mitchell Sardou Klein and Albert Guibara - all outstanding representatives of San Mateo County’s flourishing arts culture. 

“These awards are about recognizing all aspects of our arts eco-system and showcasing the individuals and organizations who advance the arts in San Mateo County,” notes Julie Fellers, President of Peninsula Arts Council. 

“We know that all who attend the Diamond Awards will come away with a renewed admiration for our community members and be inspired by the creative work that is being done here.”

Peninsula Arts Council will present the 11th annual Diamond Awards, San Mateo County’s Arts Hall of Fame, on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. at Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos.  

The event is open to the public and tickets are available at www.peninsulaartscouncil.org.  The $25 ticket price includes all Hiller Aviation Museum exhibits.

Laurel, your article hit home with me, also. I often tell people how happy I am to live in RedwoodRead More City. Your post describes some of the reasons why very well. Our town is a real community. As you described so well, there is a wonderful ease of connecting with people here and a sense that we can all be who we are and be welcome here. That is very special. Also, I feel that the wide variety of Redwood City's activities (like the Salsa Festival, but also all the remarkable diversity of events that happen all the time in Courthouse Square, cool events at the libraries, the Farmer's Markets, etc.) make this a vibrant, fun place to live. There are always interesting things to do here, most of which are either free or are very affordable. I feel like RWC's elected and appointed officials and other employees who provide key services for the citizens here (teachers, police, firefighters, librarians, Parks and Recreation Dept. employees, utilities employees, etc.) really care about its residents. Not only are there constantly fun things to do that are free or affordable, there are also many classes and education opportunities to support our needs in so many ways (looking for a job, preparing for an earthquake, etc.). It feels like a well-run city. I have only lived here a few years, but I am quite happy here and am very glad to be a resident of Redwood City. Thanks for writing this article!

I lived in Manhattan and found it difficult to find the funds to fly home for visits for many years, but i would when I could, and when I moved to Los Angeles it was easier to get home for a visit but I never ever thought I'd live here again. In 1999 my parents passed and the old house sat vacant for a couple of years and then I had a brilliant idea....why not move home! I sold my house in LA and moved back to RWC in 2003 and I've NEVER BEEN HAPPIER! One day you too may wonder away - for your career or perhaps your husbands career, but just know...Redwood City is always here to welcome you back. Thomas Wolfe said "you can't go home again" - but you can!
