La Jolla Christmas Parade Boasts Bands, Units from Around County

Incoming San Diego Mayor Bob Filner and new congressman Scott Peters join the 90-minute event.

La Jolla Sunrise Rotary rode a fire engine, and La Jolla Friends of the Seals were there. La Jolla Lutheran Church and La Jolla YMCA gymnastics units, too. But families lined Girard Avenue and Prospect Street to enjoy bands, floats and equestrian units from all over the county Sunday at the 55th annual La Jolla Christmas Parade.

Some spectators brought umbrellas, fearing rain. But it turned out to be a quintessential San Diego sunny day—with antique airplanes buzzing the route in an opening fly-by.

Sponsored by the La Jolla Town Council Parade Foundation, the 90-parade included units from Ramona (equestrian Elves), Spring Valley (Mount Miguel High School and Spring Valley Middle school bands), Carlsbad (Army and Navy Academy band), South Bay (Tijuana River Valley Equestrian Association) and El Cajon (Unarius Academy of Science and its UFO motif).

A day before his mayoral inauguration, Bob Filner waved from a car. Other dignitaries included county Supervisor Ron Roberts and newly elected congressman Scott Peters.

About a dozen bands marched among the more than 90 units. As he did with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, Santa brought up the rear. Then he made his way to the La Mesa Recreation Center park to hear requests from lap-sitting children. The Tree Lighting at 4:30 p.m. concluded festivities after children’s crafts and entertainment—young harpists, the La Jolla High Jazz Band and the Bon Temps Pappilion Lousiana Band.
