UPDATED: Police Warn Drivers to Steer Clear of Veterans, Maple

Update:  By 5 p.m. Monday, power which had been affecting area traffic lights had been restored in Redwood City, according to police.

More than 1,000 PG&E customers briefly lost power in the outage, according to utility officials.

The outage was caused by an underground equipment failure at about 1:40 p.m. in a vault under Veterans Boulevard and Maple Street, according to PG&E spokesman Jason King.

The outage affected 1,023 customers. Power was eventually restored around 3:10 p.m., King said.

Among the affected buildings was the Redwood City courthouse, which was closed due to the outage, police said. King said other city and San Mateo County offices were also affected.

The outage extended from Veterans Boulevard to Broadway between Winslow and Main streets, King said.

Redwood City police are urging residents to avoid the area of Veterans Boulevard and Maple Street Monday afternoon.

The agency issued a Nixle alert for residents at 2:25 p.m., advising of a power outage in the area.

The message states: 

Power Outage in the area of Veterans Blvd and Maple Street. Traffic on Veterans is affected. Please avoid the area.

PG&E is working a power outage at Veterans and Maple Street. Traffic signals are not operating on Veterans Blvd Maple North to Whipple Av in both Southbound and Northbound directions. Please treat all uncontrolled intersections as a Four Way Stop.
