This Weekend: OktobeRun, OktoberFest, Zoppe Family Circus, Library Dedication and More

There's plenty to do around town this weekend, so get off that couch!

FRIDAY:

DEDICATION OF DOWNTOWN LIBRARY BUILDING

When: This Friday, Oct. 12 at 3 p.m.

Where: In front of the Downtown Main Library, 1044 Middlefield Road, Redwood City

What: In commemoration of the historical significance of Redwood City's Fire Station #1, once housed in the building our Downtown Main Library is in now, a special commemoration ceremony will be held this Friday. The City of Redwood City, its Historic Resources Advisory Committee and the Native Sons of the Golden West (Parlor #66) will be dedicating a bronze plaque for the building, which was built all the way back in 1920. Members of the public are invited to join Redwood City Mayor Alicia Aguirre for this important occasion.

When: This Friday, Oct. 12, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Where: Cañada College, 4200 Farm Hill Road, Redwood City

What: The annual Trivia BEE is a fundraiser for Project READ and promotes literary awareness and provides funds for tutoring programs that serve hundreds of adults, children and families in our community each year. Each year the BEE draws hundreds of community members to enjoy delicious hors d'oeuvres as they root for their favorite team of experts in esoteric and useless information. Companies and individuals may register to participate as a team or event sponsor - and, of course, spectators play a big role in the Trivia BEE. Come join the fun!

 

ZOPPE ITALIAN FAMILY CIRCUS

When: Opening this Friday, Oct. 12, and running through Oct. 21. Matinee and evening shows available, see website for details.

Where: Circus Tent set up at 1044 Middlefield Road (near the main library), Redwood City

What: The Zoppè Family Circus welcomes guests into its intimate tent for a one-ring circus that honors the best history of the Old-World Italian tradition. Starring Nino the clown, the circus is propelled by a central story (as opposed to individual acts) that feature acrobatic feats, equestrian showmanship, cainine capers, clowning around and plenty of audience participation. 

 

SATURDAY:

2nd ANNUAL OKTOBERUN

When: This Saturday, Oct. 13, beginning at 8 a.m.

Where: Courthouse Square, 2200 Broadway, Redwood City

What: Back by popular demand this year, OktobeRun is one of the only half-marathons on the Peninsula. Starting with a half-marathon at 8 a.m. and a 5k run at 8:15, runners will be raising valuable dollars for the Redwood City Education Foundation while enjoying a scenic route stretching from Courthouse Square, down the Bay Trail by the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, to Redwood Shores and back. The 5k course follows the first part of the longer course and is mostly on city streets. After the run, join in the post-race festivities at OktoberFest, running from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. nearby. Also, the Woodside High Wildcats will be doing their own "Prowl" as a race-within-the-race as well, to show their own unique school spirit.

 

3rd ANNUAL PENINSULA OKTOBERFEST

When: This Saturday, Oct. 13, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Where: Courthouse Square, 2200 Broadway, Redwood City

What: Also benefitting the Redwood City Education Foundation, OktoberFest is a festival for lovers of three things - beer, food and entertainment. Brewers will be serving up authentic German beer as well beer made locally around the Bay Area, food vendors and trucks will be serving up delicious eats, and authentic German performers will be presenting everything from traditional music to Bavarian dancing. It's definitely a unique event not to be missed!

Note: while there is no charge for admission, beer tokens and event glasses will be sold to those 21 and older at the event. Beer must be poured into an official event glass.
