Over a Fifth of Downtown Redwood City Residents Commute within Downtown

A new map gathers data from the Census and shows to where Redwood City residents commute and where those coming to Redwood City travel from.

In an ideal world that’s most friendly to the environment, everyone would live and work in the same city. There would be fewer cars on the road and less greenhouse gas emissions spouted.

But because we are afforded the luxury of cars and other modes of public transportation, we can travel up and down San Mateo County and even to neighboring counties for work.

The following data was gathered from the 2000 Census and plotted on a map. The red circles are the center of the zip codes and the size is based on how many travel to or from there.  The blue lines show the direction of commute.

Visitors to downtown Redwood City (zip code 94063) must travel farther—6.6 miles and 13 minutes—than those living in Redwood City traveling to other destinations, 5 miles and 10 minutes.

People living in the 94061 zip code travel an average of 4.8 miles—or 10 minutes—to get to their destination, more than outsiders who average 3.4 miles—or 6 minutes—to get to this area code.

Living in and commuting from 94062 has a much longer average time—10.2 miles or 21 minutes—than those going to 94062 from other places— 7.6 miles or 16 minutes.

The three charts below provide more details about exactly where commuters to and from Redwood City (zip cods 94063, 94061 and 94062) are going.

Note: Numbers are approximate, the author mentions. The numbers do not add up to 100% because commuters traveling outside San Mateo County were too small to account for a significant percentage and were not included.

Also, all trips are calculated, not just those during peak hour.

This is really interesting. Apparently the most traffic in the mid peninsula comes from the area adjacent to the Saltworks site... where there is no housing or consumer business currently.

The data provided do not give traffic volumes or percentages of total traffic, so it's unclear how one can draw any percentage of total volume-based conclusions from them.

Also, data from a 12-year-old (2000) census are meaningless in this area & economy. Lots of economic & development differences since then -- 2012 RC Downtown is *vastly* different from 2000! Jobs have "moved around," too. This is specious at best.

I think you're reading the map wrong. I think that large red circle simply indicates the geographical center of the 94063 zip code. And there is lots of housing and consumer business in that zip code. As a matter of fact, it includes downtown.

Yes, it's obviously gotten much better since 2000.
