Over a Fifth of Downtown Redwood City Residents Commute within Downtown

A new map gathers data from the Census and shows to where Redwood City residents commute and where those coming to Redwood City travel from.

In an ideal world that’s most friendly to the environment, everyone would live and work in the same city. There would be fewer cars on the road and less greenhouse gas emissions spouted.

But because we are afforded the luxury of cars and other modes of public transportation, we can travel up and down San Mateo County and even to neighboring counties for work.

The following data was gathered from the 2000 Census and plotted on a map. The red circles are the center of the zip codes and the size is based on how many travel to or from there.  The blue lines show the direction of commute.

Note: Numbers are approximate, the author mentions. The numbers do not add up to 100% because commuters traveling outside San Mateo County were too small to account for a significant percentage and were not included.

Also, all trips are calculated, not just those during peak hour.
