More Than 200 Tickets Given to Distracted Redwood City Drivers Wednesday

'Distracted Driving Awareness Month' traffic enforcement operations began Wednesday in Redwood City and Menlo Park.

As the crackdown began Wednesday for the start of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the San Jose Mercury News reported that a whopping 200 citations were handed out in Redwood City at the corner of El Camino Real and Edgewood Road.

Twenty-five officers from a total of 16 law enforcement agencies reportedly participated in Wednesday's traffic enforcement operation. The intersection of El Camino and Edgewood was one of 11 locations in Menlo Park and Redwood City where officers sought out distracted drivers displaying bad habits such as talking on a cell phone without a hands-free device and, the most dangerous of all - texting while driving.

Other violations such as not stopping for pedestrians in a crosswalk and speeding were also cited.

Have you ever been given a ticket for distracted driving? Are there other 'problem spots' in Redwood City besides this intersection that you think officers should target? Tell us in the comments below.

If they take requests I would love to see these guys working James and El Camino Real ticketing drivers for pedestrian right of way violations. Pedestrian right of way seems to be a problem all over Redwood City.

Edgewood Road does not cross El Camino, perhaps they were at theAlameda?

Carol - I thought that was weird when I read the police's report too, but I checked the map, and they do intersect - see our map point to the right, and you can also see a photograph of where they meet on Google Earth.

Yes, but it is not a major intersection. Odd place to target but I suppose people turn there to go up to 280.

How about the Whipple and Veteran's Blvd intersection?

Let me guess: most of those tickets were given to people sitting stopped at a stop light that looked at their phone. How dangerous is that, really?
I'm all for tickets while driving, but no fatalities are caused by people reading their phone while waiting for a light to turn green.

Good question, cipiazza. This is probably related to a sewage pipeline replacement project takingRead More place nearby.

Vanessa and ctpiazza, Buckley Stone at Pete's Harbor says it is because some time ago the CityRead More dredged near muni and ran a pipe under to spill it out at Bair Island, so it is actually the remains of rotting sea life. He knows so much about this area having been at Pete's for 20 years and knowing so much about the area the tides and the nature and land around here.
