Local Tech Titans Donate Millions in 2012

One Redwood City company made the top 10 list - find out who that was, plus which other Bay Area moguls were generous in 2012.

Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg made a splash in December when he gave a half-billion dollars worth of stock to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation (the exact figure is $498.8 million).

But did you hear about Larry Page? The co-founder of Google also gave away an astounding amount of stock last year, valued at $185.6 million.

Redwood City company Oracle's CEO, Larry Ellison, was also a generous guy in 2012, giving away a whopping $45.4 million.

Compiled by Equilar and reported this week by The Wall Street Journal, the following list names the Top 10 most generous tech moguls in terms of total donations made to charitable and nonprofit causes in 2012. Most of the donors who made the list live on the Peninsula.

All told, the top 10 givers donated just under $1.5 billion worth of stock to charity in 2012. All declined comment.

I agree, the public has the right to know what they are eating. It is absurd to be purchasing foodRead More that contains GMOs and not be able to know it is in the food.... why the secret if it is so safe??? I will not shop at any food stores that refuse to provide the public with information on what I am eating or serving to the people I care about. Trader Joes and Whole Foods have my loyalty for having the courage to stand up against the big guys and set an example by doing what is right for the consumer and not folding to pressure from Monsanto, Dupont and the other corporate giants that could care less about our safety and only care about how much money they can rake in.
