Culinary Artists Put Lovin’ in the Oven For Inmates

Students enrolled in the Culinary Arts program at JobTrain in Menlo Park baked cookies the size of frozen hamburger patties this week.

"Yes, those are BIG cookies," said Kail Lubarsky, director of marketing at Job Train. 

The confections they baked were not for their enjoyment; they were for people incarcerated at the San Mateo County Jail in Redwood City. 

Lubarsky said the cookies might be the only gift the inmates get this holiday season.   

“The students worked so very hard to make it happen,” Lubarsky said, noting that 15 students donned aprons and chefs caps this year. 

For the past five years JobTrain students have prepared cookies for about 1,000 inmates. This year, they baked more than 10,000 cookies. Some of the flavors were classic, such as sugar and oatmeal. Other flavors such as Hungarian pecan, Mexican wedding, and peanut butter blossom threw a bit of spice into the mix.    

Unless someone gets hungry, all the inmates will get 10 cookies each on Christmas morning.
