If you were a fan of the regular Tuesday night farmers market in downtown, this story will come as a disappointment.

Last year, the Rotary Club of Redwood City started the downtown farmers market on Tuesday evenings, coinciding with the city's "Dancing on the Square" event. The farmers market was located on two streets adjacent to Courthouse Square, and featured more than 80 regular vendors, making it the largest farmers market in the city.

With multiple downtown construction projects currently underway, and related parking, traffic, and street closure issues, the City and the Rotary recently met, to try and explore an alternate location for the market so that it could start its season in May.

Unfortunately, both parties came to a dead end.

"Unfortunately, upon review of the options, it was determined that none of them met the needs of both the City and the Rotary, and together the decision was made to discontinue the Tuesday evening Rotary farmers market," City spokesperson Malcolm Smith said in the City's statement.

The City expressed its disappointment over losing the popular market, which had not only been popular with locals, but had also benefited the City greatly, as the Rotary Club donated proceeds from the market back to the City's Parks, Recreation and Community Services department. Just in October, the Rotary Club from last season's proceeds.

"The City is grateful for its partnership with the Rotary, and we appreciate all the good work and community service that this organization provides," said Bob Bell, City Manager of Redwood City. "I look forward to working together with them again in the future on other projects and programs for the benefit of the people of Redwood City."

Lilia Ledezma, president of the Rotary Club of Redwood City, said, "We want to thank the community for its support of last season's Rotary Farmers Market, and thank the City for its cooperation. While we were not able to identify a suitable new location and deeply regret not being able to continue with our Rotary Farmers Market, we truly appreciate the City's perspective in the need for an alternate site, and we'll continue to support Downtown Redwood City and the community."
