A Titanic Dance, Deep Breaths, and Major League Baseball Highlight Weekend Calendar

Spring has sprung, and if the anniversary of the Titanic sinking isn't your cup of tea, there's always major league baseball or a walk among redwood trees.

The Titanic Anniversary Ball

Saturday @ 6:45p in San Mateo

An elegant ball for first class passengers with a 1912 backdrop to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the last evening on RMS Titanic.

A pre-ball dance workshop will focus on the "new" dances of the 20th century, and, as usual, all set dances and mixers will be briefly taught and called. It is rumored that some of those charming passengers in steerage will make a guest appearance to perform and teach some of their own lively dances at intermission.

Suggested costume for First Class passengers is evening dress from 1900 - 1912 or modern evening dress. As always, however, costumes are admired but not required.

Breathe Deep

Saturday @ 10 a.m. in Half Moon Bay

Find out why you’ll be breathing some of the cleanest air in the world at Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve.

Get to know the secrets a redwood forest holds on the Craig Britton and Harkins Ridge Trails. A moderately-paced, 7-mile, 1,100-foot elevation change on the hike. The website says reservations are required, so check before you go.

Oakland A's Opening Weekend

Saturday @ 6 p.m. in Oakland

Essayist Alexander Pope penned the line "hope springs eternal," and there are few places the thought is more evident than in the early seasons of Major League Baseball teams. The Giants are out of town, but the A's open the season at the Coliseum, against the Seattle Mariners.
